It also treats acid reflux disease and GERD by blocking the absorption of dietary acid in the intestines. The study, presented at the American Society for Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting, was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Clinical Oncology.
The study was conducted by a team of researchers led by, who have been involved in the research since 1990. They analyzed data from a series of 7,366 cases of gastrointestinal ulceration and was asked to rate the number of times a patient had taken Nexium over the course of 10 years.
The researchers found that patients taking the Nexium drug experienced an average price reduction of 11.6 times compared to those who took no drug, versus 9.8 for the placebo group, while those taking 20 mg of the drug had a slightly lower price difference.
“The results are interesting, given that the data is based on just 7,366 cases of ulceration and the study had a few more episodes of stomach ulcers than the placebo group,” said study lead author Dr. Steven Wolof. “The way the study design was designed in the current study suggests that the majority of patients were still taking an effective medication over time.”
The researchers found that, compared with the placebo group, patients taking 20 mg of the drug had a slightly higher rate of gastrointestinal ulceration. The drug’s 20-mg dosage also had the lowest price difference of any of the three studies.
“We don’t know for sure yet what causes the observed price drop, but it probably relates to factors other than Nexium being used,” said Wolof.
“This study provides a new foundation for clinical research on the use of Nexium in oncology patients and will hopefully offer new insights to physicians in the future,” said Dr. Emily Thompson, an oncology physician at the University of Florida Medical Center in Gainesville. “While the results of the study may not be statistically significant, the study adds to the growing body of evidence that this medication is highly effective for cancer treatment.”
The study also noted that patients taking 40 mg of the drug did not have a statistically significant lower price difference in gastrointestinal ulceration. Patients taking 20 mg of the drug also had the lowest price difference for any of the three studies.
“Our results demonstrate that we have a very high probability that a patient taking 40 mg of the drug will still be taking an effective medication,” said Dr. Andrew Wicker, a professor of oncology at the University of Pennsylvania.
“The current study is an important first step in understanding the role of Nexium in cancer treatment,” said Wicker.
“This study is a step in the right direction,” added Dr. James O’Leary, a professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Dr. Wolof and the study authors are the co-authors of an article published in the January 2008 issue of theJournal of the American Medical Associationin which they wrote that the results of the study “suggest that in certain populations, there may be a dosage effect, or no dosage effect.”
